This book was dramatically different from Nebso's previous books -- it probably makes a large difference that it was done in first-person. Patti Smith presented this book in a consistent manner. That means whether it is a murder scenario or a love scene, it is presented in exactly in the same manner. That did make it interesting -- but it also led to monotony.
I am looking forward to going back to a Harry Hole story. Instead of being a story with a detective pursuing a crime, this was presented from the boring brain of a criminal. This book was dramatically different from Nebso's previous books -- it probably makes a large difference that it was done in first-person. I've read plenty of Connelly's Bosch books, but while this had the similar roller-coaster feeling, it was one of the best I've enjoyed by Connelly. It had the great combination of torment of Haller's profession with a dose each of his morals and his family.I've read plenty of Connelly's Bosch books, but while this had the similar roller-coaster feeling, it was one of the best I've enjoyed by Connelly. “I understand now why there wasn’t a Lincoln Lawyer sequel — this book was awful!”
Well, that was what I was going to write until the final two chapters. I was listening to this as an audiobook on a car trip after regaling to my wife how wonderful “The Lincoln Lawyer” was. I turned ”The Brass Verdict” off about halfway through to end my wife’s suffering.
The missing ingredient? Suspense. The suspense in the majority of this book? That Haller just got out of rehab and was given the 30 cases of a murdered lawyer — AND HOW WILL HE HANDLE IT??!?? ooooo.
After some actual lawyering, drama finally arrives big time, and there’s a shocking ending. Enough for me to bump my rating from a 1 to a 2.5. Maybe it reads better, but can’t recommend anyone listening to 10 1/2 hours of this for a one-hour, very-good ending.“I understand now why there wasn’t a Lincoln Lawyer sequel — this book was awful!”

Three OSSers attempt to disable a German submarine tender in neutral Argentine waters. But, that's only about 1/10 of the book. The rest is a soap opera. It's also notable that the technology is of the WWII period.
I've heard Griffin's stories called "Romance novels for guys". Ohhhh, welll, yeah, I guess so, especially with the first stories of a series when all the characters are being developed. The romance angles *usually* are more brief as war stories increase (or police stories increase in another series). It's a good break from the much more intense, and conventional, military books I read. It's a good read.Three OSSers attempt to disable a German submarine tender in neutral Argentine waters.
