My first Jack Reacher novel. Action and strategy prevail as Jack takes a very vulnerable older couple under wing. They owe the Albanians (or the Ukrainians?) big time, and Jack does not fail. But. The other menace in this novel is the medical consortium that works on a cash only basis, even when need is great and providers are obliged to go to loan sharks. So I expected clever Jack to address that issue, but alas. So many feats of marvelous timing and mental chess occur I was reminded of the old Doc Savage comics, where the multi talented hero could defeat all odds, no matter the circumstance. I listened to most of it on CD, and was riveted up the last part, where the insane amount of dead bodies piled up by Jack and his cohorts became unbelievable in reason and possibility. What of those families left behind to become welfare responsibility and the children left twisting in the wind? As a plot /action driven book it does not disappoint, but though the problems are resolved, the source and cause are not.

This is the book that ended my love affair with Lee Child and the Jack Reacher books. Reacher has become a crazed person, killing anyone he wants with impunity and these multitudinous killings seem to be the sole focus of the “plot”. The story line was so far fetched and the violence so overwhelmingly prevalent that I didn’t bother to finish the book. If I hadn’t been so aghast at all the shooting, I would have been too busy yawning to have managed to read as much of this drivel as I did.
4 stars. I have to tell you how much I love Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. I thought this was a good escapist read, but a bit too cinematic to me, kind of read like one of those action movies where someone gets killed in a gruesome way every 5 minutes or so. That being said, I did enjoy the escapism. Jack gets off the bus in a new town and immediately meets an old man with a big problem. He owes a lot of money to gangster loan sharks. Reacher gets involved in helping the old man and his wife and becomes aware that the city is "owned" by two different mobs, one Albanian and one Ukrainian. Being Reacher, he can't stay on the sidelines and much mayhem ensues. A bit far fetched at times, I still enjoyed the read, a good escape during a pandemic.
I have to mention that I really didn't like the way Reacher's character seems to be changing for the worst with this book.
Not the best Reacher's story but not the worst either. A bit unrealistic for this country but would be very truthful for Ukraine and Russia (take my word for this), maybe Albania as well. So try to live for awhile outside of your back yard.
as others have said, this book is just bad and not worth reading. Reacher needs to be done I think.
This is a far-fetched book about Ukrainian and Albanian mobs, health insurance and hospital costs, computer startups and fake news. Adding Reacher only made it worse. Once he was a strong, terse loner, now he's a chatty remorseless killer with growing superpowers--a clock in his head (but his dogged integrity is gone), a photographic memory, instantaneous reaction time, and accelerated thought processes. He used to physically subdue an impressive number of assailants. Now he mostly shoots them with uncanny marksmanship--all the more remarkable because he doesn't own any guns and killing appears to be the only practice he gets.
Pitted against this paragon, the bad guys are ludicrous caricatures--pathetic, bumbling, and dumb. It is sad to see the evolution of Child's style from what years ago was riveting and spare to sloppy drivel.
I usually don’t have to completely suspend any rational thinking reading a Jack Reacher story I Am A BIG fan but sorry Mr.Child this one would have to go into the what the hell were you thinking file HOPING this is just a one off
Terrible book, Jack Reacher used to,do everything with his fists and his bulk, now it’s wanton killing , chopping heads off,,,,,,just stupid and completely LAZY writing.....don’t waste your time...no wonder it was available
My least favorite Child book. I bought it for a gift and apologized when I gave it. I expect better on next book, The Sentinel. Long-time fan
I enjoyed this Reacher story. It's good to give your opinion of what you thought of the book but never tell anyone to not read the book.
Not a good read & I am a Reacher fan. Like a B grade movie where the hero goes out & shoots everyone. It just got more outlandish as he went on. It is a good idea to skip this one....I can't unread this but others may be able take heed from these comments.
My first Jack Reacher novel, and it will be my last. Bad 007, lots of violence and sexist thinking. Very disappointing.
Child is beginning to get stale. Maybe time to retire Reacher and start a new character series.
A very fast and breezy Reacher read for *dedicated* Child fans. Others be warned. This 'book' is a grade B hollywood over the top action shoot em up sh*ty movie script. Requires complete suspension of disbelief. Child's format has gotten so tired and self parodying as to be unreadable - however he achieved that so long ago in the series that anyone reading this is forewarned by definition.
Okay Mr Child, it's time to retire Jack and find a new guy to replace him...so you can re-start with some good books...this was the WORST Reacher book ever...he cant even make good decisions any more!
The worst Jack Reacher book and I've read them all. However, for me it was still middle of the road for all of the newly published books as I enjoy the genre.
Do not read this book, I am a lee Child fan and have enjoyed all his books except this one. He definately under achieved his writing standard.
I agree with many of the other critiques. This was not one of Lee Child's better books. It involved violence for violence sake. Period. The story line was good, but the violence was way over the top!
No doubt the worst " Jack Reacher" novel I have read. Ridden by violence for violence sake
set out in overly descriptive terms.
I too enjoyed the earlier Reacher books but this one is beyond ludicrous. Half the book is just repeating Reacher's "calculations" and just becomes tedious. Reacher is a guy who wanders from place to place killing people. Hmm serial killer?
This Jack Reacher book had the usual measure of violence meted out by Reacher. Somehow the violence is justified by good against evil and so even a non-violent person doesn't feel a sense of distaste. As always there's a huge amount of action in the last pages and a very satisfactory ending.
