I waited a LONG time in holding to finally get and read this book--but the wait was worth it. This is a very well written book from a French, five year old's perspective during the war. A great book for discussion; I would share it with 4th grade and above.

I think the description on the jacket flap gets it just right: "An evocative, heart-wrenching, and captivating wartime story." It's beautiful, understated, taut, atmospheric, moody, and oh so evocative. The only challenge is finding an audience for the book, as it's clearly not for everyone. It's either a long, wordy picture book or an illustrated short story about a five-year-old, with a dark and heavy subject matter that not all young readers will be ready for. But for those who are, I'm sure it will be quietly powerful. It certainly was for me.

A Great Books for Great Kids pick. Wartime is ever present in 5-year-old Rosalie's world, as she waits for her father's letters from the front. In the meantime, she becomes her own captain, creating secret missions and tracking her progress in her notebook. When a letter arrives that her mother does not read to her, Rosalie starts to understand the consequences of war. Grades 4-6.
