A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making—from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracyDeepwater Horizon is extraordinarily intimate and introspective—the story of one man's bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of "hope and change" and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how living in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible. This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama's conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

This book only confirms my greatest respect for a genuine, committed public servant. I at first thought 29 hours of audio book listening might be a challenge, but not so. Obama's candid demeanor and narrating felt like he he was sitting on my sofa telling me his story.

Neither non-fiction nor history/politics are my books of choice, but I cannot sing enough praise for this long (28.5 hours) audiobook read by the author, President Barack Obama. I learned much about the thought processes and strategies that went into decisions, the values held by this remarkable president, and the challenges he and his administration faced. Being read by President Obama adds an intimacy to the reading process. I would recommend it to all ages from teens / young adults and up and political parties for insight. For those who monitor teens' reading, do be aware that President Obama occasionally uses some "bad words" to express his frustrations. My biggest disappointment with the book is that it only covers his first term (to the point of the Bin Laden assassination) and I will have to wait for the next volume to complete the journey.

Amazingly candid and loved his own personal thoughts and not just a reading of history. His relationship with his staff and every person he encountered were real as read by himself in the audio book with honesty and humor. So happy I got to hear his own remarks as if a conversational story. I hope everyone reads it and looking forward to his next book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

WOW!!!! If you have a chance to listen to Barak Obama narrate this book, I highly recommend that you do so. After 4 years of political chaos, his voice of reason is a joy to hear!!! I love the fact that he is humble and self-deprecating. His humor comes through loud and strong as well as his honor, intelligence, and dedication. It is marvelous to hear the stories inside the White House when it is difficult to know from the news exactly what happened in historical events. The book ends with the death of Osama Bin Laden, so there is much to look forward to in the upcoming books. Highly recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby

...I’m not yet ready to abandon the possibility of America... For I’m convinced that the pandemic we’re currently living through is both a manifestation of and a mere interruption in the relentless march toward an interconnected world, one in which peoples and cultures can’t help but collide. In that world—of global supply chains, instantaneous capital transfers, social media, transnational terrorist networks, climate change, mass migration, and ever-increasing complexity—we will learn to live together, cooperate with one another, and recognize the dignity of others, or we will perish. And so the world watches America—the only great power in history made up of people from every corner of the planet, comprising every race and faith and cultural practice—to see if our experiment in democracy can work. To see if we can do what no other nation has ever done. To see if we can actually live up to the meaning actually live up to the meaning of our creed.
