A welcome reprieve from all the grisly murder and sinister politics of the Song of Ice and Fire series. This collection of novellas finds Westeros in simpler times, roughly 90 years before Game of Thrones set the whole world on fire (and ice, although who knows if the White Walkers will ever get to the continent proper in the main series. I don't care if the TV show has already crossed that Rubicon, I'm gonna pretend like it happens until Martin writes the rest of the stinkin' books!). These novellas tell the rather delightful tale of Ser Duncan the Tall's journey from a lowly hedge knight to Commander of the Kingsguard when he unwittingly befriends a future king of Westeros. These stories provide some great Westerosi history and cover events discussed in the Song of Ice and Fire novels, but without the creeping sense of dread that comes with reading those books.
