This movie is what you call "event television". It was broadcast at the height of the Cold War amidst Ronald Reagan's "evil empire" rhetoric on November 20, 1983 on ABC in the United States to an estimated audience of 100 million. The movie location focuses on the area around Kansas City where many American ICBM's are located, thus likely targets for a nuclear attack. Tensions rise rapidly between NATO and the Warsaw Pact to the the point that both sides unleash their ICBM's on each other causing complete devastation. The first half of the film covers the lead up to the attacks, while the second focuses on how people deal with the horrendous aftermath. It is never made clear who fired first.
